Entry #10. Squid Game.
Okay by now I think we have all heard of or know what the Netflix show Squid Game is. I think we can all agree that it is one of the best and most popular shows out there today. With that being said, if you haven't seen this show yet, it is definitely a must! Right from the start it is interesting and all throughout the show, even though it is only 9 episodes long, it has the perfect amount of action, suspense, and even a bit of emotional appeal. In fact, along with Gilmore Girls and The Fosters, this show is one of my favorites!
To start off, the show begins with telling a bit of the background of a poor young man and his struggles. After showing this, it gets a little interesting. While in the subway late at night Gi-hun, one of the main characters, is approached by a mysterious stranger. This stranger is dressed up nicely wearing a suit and tie and holds a suitcase. The stranger asks Gi-hun if he would like to earn a bit of money by playing a simple game, and of course he is skeptical. But, being as desperate as he is, he cannot resist and eventually agrees. The game is simple, they throw a little piece of paper on the ground and try to flip it over to the other side, if he does that then he gets money, if not then the stranger gets to slap him; therefore, he has nothing to lose. After many, many slaps to the face Gi-hun finally wins a game and money. Once the stranger is done playing, he asks Gi-hun if he would like to earn much more money by simply just playing games similar to that one. He then hands Gi-hun a card with information, as in a phone number to call, if he would like to participate and then disappears. It is needless to say that Gi-hun eventually calls to participate. Along with many others, Gi-hun receives instructions on what to do. During the night Gi-hun stands on a curb waiting for someone to pick him up in order to participate. Once someone does, they then gas him to make him sleep. When he wakes up, he is in a giant warehouse with hundreds of other people, laying in a bed. Once everyone is up and awake, a few hosts in odd suits give instructions. One of the men in the suits explains that everyone there will play/participate in 6 different games over 6 days. He then proceeds to say that those who win all six games will receive a huge cash prize. After some express their doubt to the host, he then explains that everyone there is in a very great amount of debt, need the money, and went there willingly. Once he reminds everyone of that and also explains the amount of money they will win, everyone agrees again and signs away their rights. After that, they proceed to play the first game. In this first game all of the people are gathered into a court-looking place that is decorated as a field of tall grass. After everyone is in the space where the game will take place, the doors shut behind them. Then while a female automatic voice begins explaining the instructions of the game, everyone notices a big robot doll at the other end of the arena. Everyone is very surprised that the game that they will be playing is one that they are familiar with, called "Red Light, Green Light", which is usually played by children. The voice then goes on to say that when the doll shouts "green light" everyone can walk and move to get closer to the other side, when the doll shouts "red light" everyone must stop; they also mention that after the doll shouts "red light" anyone who is detected moving by the doll will be "eliminated". In addition to these rules, there are more that explain a 5-minute play time in which everyone must be at the other end of the arena by the end of the 5 minutes, and those who still have not made it to the other end by the 5-minute mark, will not pass the round. Then, after all of the rules have been described, the game automatically begins and the timer starts and the doll shouts "green light". Everyone begins to walk/run and make their way to the other side then suddenly the doll shouts "red light", everyone stops moving besides one person who cannot seem to keep balance. The female voice then says "Player 324. Eliminated." and the guy is shot and falls to the ground. Everyone confused as to what they had just heard continues to play the game, but when the guy's friend checks on him thinking that he was just joking around he sees blood come out of the guys mouth. Frightened by this he then starts turning around and running, the doll detects his movement and the guy is shot right in front of a lady. Then after seeing this it turned chaotic, most of the people begin panicking and running, and at that moment many guns go off and start shooting everyone who is moving and running. After everyone who was moving is shot and dead, the rules are repeated and the game continues. The crowd then follows an old man who was the first to continue playing as everyone else was still in shock. While the game continues, a mysterious host in a luxurious room watches the game from a television. To continue, some people find hacks, as in hiding behind other people, to be able to not get caught. With only two minutes left on the clock, everyone is determined and frightened, and as some people begin playing dirty, some begin helping each other. Now, with only 59 seconds left on the clock, it starts getting suspenseful. More and more people start rushing to get to the other side and more and more people die. Finally, it's the last 20 seconds and while he is running, Gi-hun steps on a dead persons arm and starts falling. When the doll shouts "red light" he is still falling but then suddenly stops in mid-air, the camera then shows an Indian man who is holding him up so that he does not move. The clock shows, 3...2..., the dolls head begins turning back, and Gi-hun and the Indian man leap across to the other end of the finish line, ...0. They made it to the other end safely. To end, everyone who is still left in the field is shot and everyone who is still alive tries to catch their breath and then the roof begins to close. The last scene is the camera zooming out of the arena only to show that they are on an island in the middle of the ocean. Then the first episode ends.
Don't worry I won't spoil anything else for you. With that being only the first episode, you can only imagine what the rest of the episodes look like. So once again, if you have not yet watched Squid Game, what are you waiting for?!

ReplyDeleteI watched this show about a week after it came out and finished it in about two days, I was that involved in it. I personally didn't find it that scary of show, it was just brutal with the killings. I think it will be interesting how they make the next season and where it will go next.
